Paddy & Scott’s announced the appointment of James Horler as its new Chairman, marking an exciting chapter in its coffee journey.

James Hurley is a standout figure in the UK hospitality industry, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success that is set to propel Paddy & Scott’s to new heights.

Embarking on his career as a kitchen porter, James’s journey is a testament to perseverance and vision. He quickly rose through the ranks at the THF Hotels group, distinguishing himself as the youngest management trainee to secure an apprenticeship. This significant experience catalysed a series of accomplishments, including his instrumental role in developing Frankie & Benny’s in the 1990s.

James led the management buy-in of La Tasca for £28m in 2001, leading it through a successful IPO and eventually selling it for £134m. His leadership prowess was further highlighted during his tenure as CEO of Ego Restaurants, where he navigated industry-leading growth and an eventual sale to Mitchells & Butlers PLC in June 2023.

James’s numerous accolades, including An Acorn Award, The Catey for Group Restaurateur and The Hero and Icon Award reflect his deep commitment to seeing talent in the hospitality industry prosper.

“We are thrilled to welcome someone of James’s calibre to join the Paddy & Scott’s crusade,” said Jon Reed, CEO. “His passion for people and unique expertise in growing great companies that really stand for something are perfectly aligned with our ethos and ambitions.”

James is equally excited, stating, “The potential at Paddy & Scott’s is uncapped, and its formula to help other hospitality operators increase their coffee sales is highly attractive. With so many challenges coming our way, working with partners that can drive increased sales is a great help. The impact is a critical advantage, especially in today’s challenging environment. Furthermore, their commitment to fairer trade practices and supporting coffee-growing communities is genuinely inspiring. Growth should be a speedboat, not an ocean liner.”

When he’s not driving business success, James enjoys the tranquil life in North Buckinghamshire, alongside his family. He has two grown-up daughters: one is dedicated to education as a teacher, while the other excels as a hotel manager at the prestigious five star The Grand Hotel in Birmingham. Outside of work, James enjoys choir singing, tennis and football, making the most of his leisure time.
