Just Eat expands plastic-free packaging

Just Eat Takeaway.com is expanding its sustainable packaging offer to restaurant partners across Europe, introducing a new range of takeaway boxes featuring a plastic-free coating. Developed in collaboration with sustainable packaging provider Huhtamaki and materials technology company Xampla, the packaging will be rolled out across 10 European markets including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Spain.

The launch follows successful deployments with Lieferando in Germany and Austria and will now extend Xampla’s Morro™ Coating across Just Eat Takeaway.com’s wider European platform.

Morro™ Coating, developed by UK-based Xampla, replaces the plastic linings traditionally used in takeaway boxes while maintaining grease and moisture resistance. The coating is made from natural plant proteins with no chemical modification, providing a plastic-free barrier designed to meet the performance demands of the food delivery sector. The boxes themselves are manufactured by Huhtamaki using sustainably sourced corrugated paper.

For restaurant partners operating on the platform, the packaging offers a recyclable solution that is compliant with the Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD). The plastic-free coating enables the boxes to be processed through existing recycling streams without the need for plastic separation, supporting easier waste management and potential Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) benefits.

The packaging has been verified as plastic-free by the National Physical Laboratory — currently the only food packaging coating to hold this accreditation — and has been designed to maintain structural rigidity and heat retention even when used with greasy or moisture-heavy dishes that have traditionally required plastic-lined packaging.

By expanding the availability of this packaging across Europe, Just Eat Takeaway.com is providing restaurant partners with an additional compliant packaging option that meets regulatory requirements while maintaining the barrier performance required for takeaway and delivery operations.

Supporting partners in adopting more sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics forms part of Just Eat Takeaway.com’s wider efforts to reduce plastic pollution in the on-demand delivery sector. The rollout expands the company’s sustainable packaging range and enables restaurant partners across the continent to adopt plastic-free packaging for a broader variety of menu items.

Alexandra French, CEO of Xampla, said: “Europe is moving fast on packaging regulation, and the demand for materials that can genuinely replace plastic has never been stronger. There is real regulatory clarity across these markets, strong environmental ambition, and a willingness to adopt new materials when they work.

“For us, this expansion is about scale. We have proven Morro™ Coating works; now we are rolling it out across 10 European markets through one of the continent’s largest food delivery platforms.

“If we want to replace plastic, we have to do it in high-volume, high-performance applications like food delivery. This rollout shows that natural materials can compete, and win, in exactly those environments.”
