Morelli grows its retail footprint to 312 Sainsbury’s stores

Morelli Ice Cream is expanding its presence in Sainsbury’s this autumn, with its Double Cream Vanilla flavour increasing its store listing from 71 to 312 locations. The expansion will also extend the availability of its Raspberry Ripple flavour, while a new Belgian Chocolate Chip variety joins the range.

Made with Northern Irish double cream and Irish creamery butter, Double Cream Vanilla has received recognition in several industry competitions, including the Great Taste Awards and UK & Ireland National Ice Cream Competitions.

“We’re incredibly proud to be expanding our presence with Sainsbury’s, an important milestone that marks bringing our ice-cream steeped in heritage and quality to even more UK consumers,” said Daniela Morelli-Kerr, sales and marketing director. “Alongside the significant growth of our Double Cream Vanilla listing, we’re delighted to introduce our new Belgian Chocolate Chip flavour, giving shoppers even more reason to discover our delicious Morelli range.”

The business began when Peter Morelli moved from Italy to Northern Ireland in 1911, bringing with him a family ice cream recipe passed down by his father. He started making and selling homemade ice cream from his café in Coleraine before expanding to seaside resorts along the Causeway Coast. In 1997, the family moved into wholesale production, supplying hotels, restaurants and retailers.

Now run by the fourth generation, with the fifth also working on the factory floor, Morelli has won several industry accolades, including the Champion of Champions title at the UK & Ireland National Ice Cream Competitions for its Double Cream Vanilla, a Great Taste Golden Fork for Caramelised Hazelnut and the Supreme Champion title at the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards for its Mango Sorbet.
