Premium rebrand and new products launched by British baking brand

British-owned baking brand Food Thoughts has launched a major rebrand alongside a new premium range of cake mixes, frostings and chocolate chips, marking its most significant expansion in more than 25 years.

The relaunch introduces a refreshed brand identity, including new packaging, logo and visual assets, as the company looks to move beyond its heritage cocoa products and establish itself as a leading player in the UK home baking market.

Launching exclusively in Sainsbury’s, the new range includes Beautiful Chocolate Cake Mix and Beautiful Ginger Cake Mix, alongside Velvety Chocolate Flavour Frosting and Velvety Vanilla Flavour Frosting. The company has also expanded its chocolate portfolio with the addition of Milk Chocolate Chips made with 41% single-origin Colombian cocoa.

Food Thoughts has built its reputation on premium organic cocoa and cacao products, with a focus on ethical sourcing and quality ingredients. The latest launch extends that proposition into the wider home baking category, targeting consumers seeking convenience without compromising on taste or provenance.

According to the company, the move is designed to address what it sees as a lack of innovation in the cake mix and frosting market. Food Thoughts believes many consumers continue to view cake mixes as a low-quality option, despite growing demand for premium bakery products and sweet treats.

Jason Kerr, Joint Managing Director of Food Thoughts, said: “When we acquired Food Thoughts, we weren’t looking to launch just another cake mix. We saw an opportunity to redefine what people expect from the category. Millions of people already bake, but most only do it occasionally. We believe that if we can make baking simpler, more enjoyable and deliver results people are genuinely proud of, we can encourage them to bake more often.”

The company cites industry data suggesting that increasing baking frequency by 20% could add around £30 million to the sweet baking category. Rather than targeting existing cake mix buyers alone, Food Thoughts aims to attract consumers who enjoy baking but are deterred by time constraints, complexity or concerns over achieving consistent results.

Developed with professional chefs, the mixes require only oil and water and have been designed to deliver reliable results while reducing food waste and preparation time. The accompanying frostings have also been formulated to offer a more premium alternative to traditional ready-made options.

Consumer research commissioned by Food Thoughts among more than 2,500 customers found that 73% would consider purchasing a ready-to-use cake mix, with lack of time, mess and concerns about the finished result cited as key barriers to baking more frequently.

Mark Gould, Joint Managing Director at Food Thoughts, said: “Retailers aren’t looking for another cake mix. They’re looking for something that brings new shoppers into the category. That’s been our focus from day one.”

The new range will begin rolling out from mid-August 2026 and is expected to be stocked in up to 440 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide. Food Thoughts said the launch forms part of a wider strategy to create a premium tier within home baking and support long-term category growth.
