Independent Scotch Whisky distiller, blender and bottler Douglas Laing & Co recently introduced a new edition of its Island Malt: Rock Island Rum Cask Edition.
This latest bottling follows in the footsteps of the immensely popular Rock Island Mezcal Edition in 2022, which showcased Rock Island’s maritime spirit finished in Mezcal casks, imparting an added layer of sweet smokiness.
Rock Island Rum Cask Edition has been finished exclusively in Plantation Rum Casks hailing from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.
The Single Cask Single Malts married to create our Island Whisky have enjoyed a lengthy finishing period. Rock Island fans should ‘anticipate salted caramel, toasted oak, brown sugar and a touch of smoke’.
This new release captures and translates an elegant yet oceanic freshness through its premium maritime aesthetic. The tropical colourways of blues, reds and greens are accentuated by the flashes of gold foil detailing. This effectively represents each of the islands present in the process of creating this Island Malt Scotch Whisky: Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay.
This limited-edition has been bottled at 46.8% ABV and is proudly offered without colouring or chill-filtration, in line with the Douglas Laing family’s ethos of bottling whisky ‘As Natural as It Gets’.
“The Rock Island Brand is deeply cherished at Douglas Laing, as it continues to embrace the very best of Scotland’s Whisky-making islands,” Emma Reid, Rock Island’s Brand Manager, commented. “We are so excited to have teamed up with Plantation Rum, in whose casks our Island Malt has been finished. This expression of Rock Island highlights a harmony of flavour, from the peat-smoked shores of Scotland to the warm climes of the Caribbean, as it brings together two iconic spirits. We cannot wait to share this whisky with Rock Island fans globally!”
“During his many trips around the world, Alexandre Gabriel, creator of Plantation Rum, jumps at the chance to discover the production techniques, traditions, and innovations of his peers – distillers, brewers, or passionate wine growers,” Jonas Indesteege, Brand Manager at Plantation Rum, said. “These encounters enable him to forge true friendships and, fortunately for lovers of unique spirits, to develop exclusive collaborations and experiments that give birth to deliciously unexpected rums brimming with originality. While visiting Douglas Laing & Co he found a true connection which was the start of an exceptional partnership…”
The Rock Island Rum Cask Edition is expected to retail at £65 and will be available globally.
