As Scotland fans prepare for a long-awaited return to the World Cup stage, Scottish butcher brand Simon Howie has launched a campaign calling on the United States to lift its decades-long ban on haggis ahead of the 2026 tournament.
The “Make Haggis Legal Again” campaign comes as thousands of members of the Tartan Army are expected to travel to the USA this summer, only to find Scotland’s national dish unavailable due to American food regulations introduced in 1971 banning certain offal ingredients traditionally used in haggis.
To support the campaign, Simon Howie has launched a petition urging US authorities to reverse the ban, alongside a specially commissioned campaign film featuring broadcaster and prominent Scotland supporter Gordon Smart. The film also stars Tartan Army fans, Scottish TikTok creator Mark Thorburn and a cameo from Simon Howie himself.
Simon Howie said Scotland supporters are recognised worldwide for their passion and spirit, but will head to the tournament without access to their national dish. He added that the campaign is appealing to America’s long-standing connection with Scotland to “embrace this delicious delicacy and Make Haggis Legal Again.”
As part of the initiative, the company is distributing limited-edition “No Haggis No Party” flags to Scotland supporters travelling to the tournament, aiming to raise awareness in stadiums and fan zones across the USA.
Gordon Smart said the 2026 World Cup would be “a trip we’ll never forget” for Scotland fans and urged supporters to back the campaign. “We’ll have the flags, the songs and the scarves and if this petition has anything to do with it, we’ll have the haggis too,” he said.
The “Make Haggis Legal Again” petition is now open for signatures, with Simon Howie encouraging Scotland supporters and haggis fans worldwide to support the campaign. The petition can be signed via Change.org.
